FUN FACTS ABOUT MILOS

A statue of Greek Goddess Aphrodite was discovered in a field in Milos in 1820. It was discovered by a farmer and the original one it’s now in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. A replica of it, it’s in the Archaeological Museum of Milos that was gifted from the French government (!)

Milos and its Cycladic neighbours are part of the “South Aegean Volcanic Arc”. This Arc  extends between Turkey and mainland Greece (almost 500 km). It was created when the African tectonic plate moved under the Aegean Sea.

Milos has natural and mineral resources such as perlite, Bentonite, a little amount of Kaolin, and pozzolana. These minerals are gathered in Milos through mine techniques, and they are exported to other countries in the world. In ancient times, millstones, sulphur, gypsum, and barite used to be mined here. You can see some of the old mines around the island

In your Milos “taste adventure” don’t forget to try some delicious food and pies.

Pitaradakia ( another delicious form of pies)

Fried fresh Calamari (squid)

Village salad ( with yummy feta cheese)

Cuttlefish on pasta

Grilled octopus

Orange, olive, cypress, tamarisk, juniper and arbutus are the ideal fruits to try fresh from the field as they are the main crops in the island. Vines, cotton and barley are also well grown crops for other materials

If you want more historical adventures, visit the Catacombs of Tripiti Village, that discovered my archaeologists in 1844.

There are 3 interconnected underground catacombs that used to be Christian cemeteries during Roman times and a place of worship and refuge for Christians who were persecuted by the Romans. The catacombs are 150 metres above sea level.

NOTE: To get there, you have to climb a steep hill to get to the catacombs where a guard can take you on a brief guided tour. From there, you can take in a lovely view of the sea.
