Of course, as well as almost all places in Greece, its name has a special meaning. Kimolos got its name from the word kimolia. Kimolia is chalk. The chalk is basically white. So it’s Kimolos! Everywhere you look you will admire white houses, white cliffs and… just a white dream.

During the 13th – 14th century the Venetians called Kimolos Arzandiera or Arzandarawhich, which means silver (because of the white colour of its rocks) . Ovid, a Roman poet, calls Kimolos cretosam, while referring to the Itinerarium of Antonini Augusti, who calls it Cimelos. The locals just call it “Kimolos, my paradise.” And they are not wrong about that.

Prasa is a great getaway if you want to avoid the crowds of other beaches that are in Milos. Prassa is, maybe, the best beach on the island of Kimolos when it comes to scenery. Close by, one can find the quarries where chalk used to be excavated.

Sarakiniko, as you read before it’s a lunar scenery you will feel for sure you are the protagonist in a dream!

Rock formations were created by several layers of sea and land organisms’ fossils on the volcanic rock over several millennia. The wind and sea then sculpted the rocks that were created by the fossil layering into the bizarre and otherworldly shapes that make Sarakiniko unique. Wave erosion has created caves along the coast.

It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Aegean. Don’t miss the fact that it is also photogenic and when you google photos of Milos in Google or Instagram, the first thing you will see it’s for sure Sarakiniko. It is one of the closest things to exploring an alien planet or the surface of the moon but combined with an exotic seafront.

The Saracen pirates took refuge in these caves and the beach got its name from them.

Tip: Sarakiniko it’s also an amazing place for sunset.

This is the northest beach of the island. From a geographical perspective, Trachilas is the remnant of one of the two big extinct volcanoes on Milos (the other one is Tsigrado mentioned before). When you get very close you will realise that the beach is very stony.

Located right next to Firiplaka, Tsigrado is a small sandy cove with crystal water. Going down this beach is a bit difficult as visitors have to pass through a rocky passage to get there. If you are an adventurous soul you can go there by land (except the Trinity cruise) to climb down the wooden ladder with the rope.

The surrounding environment with the rocky cliffs is impressive and the waters are shallow. There, you can explore the many caves, natural arches, secluded inlets, and cliff jumps.

In its both sides there are caves to explore asn the bottom of the sea it is definitely worth it to. Sooo, get ready with your snorkelling equipment.

Let’s go now to a small historical trip about this place. Many years ago a steep, dazzling white sand dune used to lead all the way down to the water. Sand residues from the nearby Imerys (formerly S&B) plant had been disposed of here, thereby creating one of the most idyllic beaches on Milos.

Now, however, it doesn’t look like that. A large part of the sand has been swept away by the surf in the winter, so you have to climb the wooden ladder mentioned before.

There is a perlite mine operated by the mining company Imerys along with Trachilas.

Gerontas, was the favourite beach of foreigners who came to Milos from the 60’s and 70’s. The main characteristic of this beach, isa rock that is in the middle of the sea and a natural inside the rocks which connect it to the sea. Gerontas.It is near an old quarry. (Milos is full of that as you may realise)

Gerontas in Greek means “ Old man” Funny how Greeks give names to the places right? Many people who already visited Milos in reviews say that this is one of the most beautiful beaches of the south part in Milos. And who can blame them if it already has the reputation since the 60’s?

Klima village is very famous in Milos. The reason, it’s because it attracts people to have a closer look at “Sirmata”.

”Sirmata” are two-floor colourful fisherman houses. The first floor is decorated on the outside, with vivid colours of blue, red and orange where the fishers live with their families. On the down floor they used it as storage of their boats. They protected them there from the bad weather.

Now, these fisherman houses are used as Air bnb’s for tourists. The way to go there by car is a bit unstable.

In 1820, on a field in Klima village, a farmer dug up a statue.

What was it? It was the “Aphrodite. The Goddess of beauty in Greek Mythology. Because it was founded in MIlos, they named it “Aphrodite of Milos.”

After the discovery, they put up a sign to recognize the area that the statue found. It is historically important for the statue and as well for the area.

A copy of this statue is now in the Archaeological Museum of Milos. The original statue is in the Louvre Museum. Klima has many taverns to enjoy the greek gastronomy and it is worth it to see the sunset from this place.

Arkoudes it’s the plural word for the word bear (the animal). Arkoudes are a group of rocky islets located off the coast of Milos, near Plathiena beach, on the northern part of the island.

The rocks appear to show an opening mouth, a nose, eyes, ears and a body that look rather like bears, hence their name. They also say that if you see from a different angle it looks like a rabbit too! Arkoudes rocks are about 20 feet high (closer to the size of a bear) and they are abrupt and sharp.You can only see them by boat as they are not accessible to walk there.

The Cape Vani, it’s a historically important landscape in Milos and it is the northest part of the island. It is located 25km northwest of the port Adamantas.

Vani used to be a volcanic crater under the sea. It is famous because of its abandoned manganese mining, started in 1898. Because of the minings, the ground is composed of fine orange sand. The landscape it’s completed from a huge rock formation vertically cut, with horizontal layers in black and ruby ​​colour.

In the area, you will find old tunnels, caves, ruins of buildings near the mine and a large opening at the edge of the cape.Vani is also known between the locals as “bacon” because of the similarities in the colour with bacon. (!)

Tip: There is a small path that leads to a beach with colourful stones.

Kalogries beach is a very small quiet beach in Milos. In the past it used to be THE place for sailors and fishers. The legend says that it got its name from nuns wandering around the area and the seafarers were seeing them. The special thing about this place is the impressive volcanic rock formations around it and the waters are crystal clear. The port of the area is considered windless and the waters are shallow.

Sykia it’s a magical cave in Milos. The special thing about this cave is that it is open on the top and the reflection of the sun goes inside, making it a wonderful spectacle. The cave it’s 5 meters high and 20 meters wide.

The top part collapsed, with the result of creating a”hole” on the top of the cave where you can see the sky. The name of this place in Greek, means, “Fig tree”. It got it because very close to the open-top cave there is a fig tree.

Sykia cave is only accessible by boat. Some big boats can’t access the cave inside but you will go as close as possible to see this impressive phenomenon. On the inside of the cave there is a small corner of pebbles and rocks that look like a tiny strip of a beach.

(!) The water in the cave is deep and cold and the colours are a mix of transparent green and blue.

While cruising around Milos, you will meet on the southwest tip “Kleftiko”. Kleftiko it’s one of the most beautiful rock formations not only for Greece but for the whole Mediterranean sea. It is the most photogenic place and the trademark landscape of Milos.

It is also known as the “Sea Meteora” by Greeks. Meteora is a rock formation in central Greece hosting one of the largest built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Kleftiko, it is only accessible by boat and you will love it for sure.

Kleftiko is a cove, where old pirates used to hide. The name in english means Bandits’ Lair. The name Kleftiko comes mainly from the old days, when the pirates operating in the Aegean used its bays as a base, setting up carts on the unsuspecting ships that passed through the area and looting them. Its natural caves offered safe shelter from the difficult weather conditions that prevailed in the sea area, mainly protecting the ships from the strong winds of the Aegean.You cannot claim to have seen Milos island if you haven’t visited Kleftiko at least once.

Excellent beach under the caldera of the volcano, accessible only by boat. Sandy without stones and clear turquoise waters. Gerakas has huge sand slides, formed by Perlite which make it the main attraction of the area.

Gerakas has a volcano on the beach. The volcano of “Saint Kyriaki”. If you get close to there you will still see the steam coming up! If you go inside the caves there you will feel sooo hot like you are burning in a pot. The landscape is impressive and original.

One small tip about this place is that the water is super-deep up to the very “beach”. You literally sort of climb up to the beach. So, having in mind that the boat will probably park far away from the beach, if you are not a good swimmer, don’t try to reach the right coast, because you will get tired.
